You can’t control what you can’t control.

I grew up in a high-stress environment that, for a while, shaped the way I looked at stressful events in my life. I would react with too much energy or emotion and I knew that clouded my judgment. It took a lot of self-work to get me past that and now I’m taking steps to avoid causing the same situation with Desi and Talia (my children).

Now, when I deal with a stressful or unexpected situation, I look to see if it’s truly important enough to ruin my current mood. It’s way too easy to get caught up in the moment and let the emotions of it overwhelm you. Is the event you’re dealing with worth derailing your entire day? Usually not.

Even more important, I ask myself if it’s worth skewing the way my children look at stressful situations. The next time they deal with something unexpected, should their first reactions be fear, anger, or withdrawal? Absolutely not.

I hope that you all take a moment and think about how you approach stressful events this week. Don’t fall for the knee-jerk reaction. Recognize the events for what they are, find a solutions (if there are any), then continue on!

Yours in health,

John
