Cory’s “Before & After” pictures may have caught your eye, but her story goes far beyond that. Over the past few years, she has taken on major physical as well as mental changes in the pursuit of bettering her health…and these changes were, at least partially, motivated by a major health scare.

At the age of 45, Cory was 423lbs and required a heart valve replacement. That event had such a powerful impact that it became her catalyst for MASSIVE change. You can read about her journey in her own words below.

These days, Cory is a regular face here at our club! She has lost weight, gained strength, improved her coordination & speed, and she’s also gained valuable skills in our Private Boxing/Kickboxing program.

We’re so proud of Cory and her dedication to her health! We want to inspire others with her story, and she was kind enough to share details about her journey. Please read her words and use them to stoke the flames of your own motivation!

“I have always had a weight issue since I was a child. After having 3 children I was not very active. I was always driving them to practices, games, swimming lessons, dance lessons, tournaments etc. I was always embarrassed to sweat in front of people.

After having heart valve replacement when I was 45 I decided I needed to make a permanent change before it was too late. I was up to 423 lbs. I went for bariatric surgery when I was 46. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get the boost I needed on my own. I changed my way of thinking about food as well. Within the first 2 ½ months I lost 75 lbs. I was able to then start walking trails and eventually took on the treadmill and a bike. It took me 5 years to get to 235 lbs. I didn’t want this to be a temporary solution so I did slowly and besides a few little hiccups, I was happy with my progress.

However, my progress stalled for almost a year. I knew I had to jumpstart again somehow. A few coworkers had done the 21-Day Challenge and were very successful with it. They convinced me to try it. I did and I saw a difference in the way my clothes fit. I then decided to throw away my scale and chose not to care what I way but enjoy the changes I saw and felt. 2 years later I went from a size 16 to a size 12. I got a personal trainer and started kickboxing.

I enjoy the gym 4 times a week for 30 mins a day. When they added “Hot Punch” and Johnny (Sabertooth) as a personal kickboxing coach I was hooked. Johnny is amazing. I had some health issues and instead of letting me give up on the gym he tailored my worked out to what I needed or could do safely. Thank you, everyone, at John Savidis’ Lean and Fit. I looked forward to spending another year staying healthy.”

Here are some words from Cory’s coach, Coach Saber:

“Cory and I have been working together for going on 2 years. She fell in love when I introduced her to boxing and hitting focus pads as a workout. She picked up what I was putting down well and progressed through the first chapters very well.

Our boxing work did have a brief pause when Cory developed vertigo. That knocked us completely off the great track she was on because her balance was jeopardized big time, but still no quitting.

As soon as her doctors gave her a green light to exercise, we were back to the rebuilding process. Coming from the ground up. Countless ladder drills and balance work has brought Cory past the previous point she was at before vertigo!

It has been incredible to help aid Cory in this recovery. She is now back on the pads and looking incredible! All thanks to her will and determination to stay focused on her nutrition and exercise.

Keep up the great work, Cory – Coach Saber 🥊“

Kip Watson has been a member in our program for a couple of years now and in that time, he’s defined grit.

After making a commitment to himself, he hasn’t let injury, work, travel, or anything else become an excuse to skip his classes here at John Savidis’ Lean & Fit. He definitely enjoys himself and his life (just check out his travel shots on Instagram! 😲), but he makes the time to include exercise & fitness in his lifestyle.

Kip is a great example of how to live a balanced, healthy lifestyle! So we asked him for a few words on his approach to achieving this balance…

I’ve had the pleasure of being a member at Lean and Fit for over 2 years now. I had been a member at the old location on Upper Gage.

When we moved back to Hamilton, my mission was to become a member again. I knew the program worked, and I needed to get fitter and lose weight.

I have bad arthritis, so I was concerned but knew I would be able to modify exercises to suit me. My main goal was to get and keep my body moving. Coming to class is a habit now. Consistency is key to results. Nothing happens overnight.

Coming to class makes me feel great. I love the Hot Punch: Infrared Kickboxing Strength class, and Group Weight Training. Talk about a great stress relief!

As I mentioned, I have very bad arthritis, I have had wrist surgery, as well as a total knee replacement on my right knee, and this year, a total hip replacement on my left hip.

Lot’s of fun.

By the way, with all the metal in my body, it’s quite funny when I go through the metal detectors at the airport. They light up like a Christmas Tree!

Editor’s Note: Kip has actually made a habit of returning to his fit lifestyle early! His doctors have told him that he continues to recover quickly because of his healthy habits. And with his most recent surgery (hip replacement), he was scheduling his workouts while still in the hospital bed! Talk about eager!

Through my recovery, I couldn’t wait to get back to class. Being consistent and fit before my surgeries, paid huge dividends in helping my recovery.

Leg strength, upper body strength, and cardio fitness were all instrumental in helping me recover. Returning to my classes, I got stronger and my recovery went very quickly. I made sure to modify what I needed too so I could get moving.

I have made several new and great friends here and they were all very surprised, and happy, to see me back in class having fun!

I am 62 now. We all have aches and pains, especially as we age. The key is to be active. Gaining strength, getting your body moving, and improving your cardio is the recipe to feeling better physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Being sedentary as you grow older is the worst thing you can do for your health.

The beauty of the John Savidis’ Lean and Fit program is the flexibility of the exercises. If you have a bit of difficulty with an exercise, or if you have a previous injury or concern, it can be accommodated for. The staff and trainers are all first-class and want you to succeed with your fitness goals, whatever they may be.

I want to start personal training with Boban. I want to get stronger and try to put on some muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat!

The hardest part of any worthwhile journey is the first step. Once you try a class, you’ll be hooked!

I use this recipe a LOT and I get the feeling that you will too.

Adding some pesto to a chicken salad or low-carb avocado carbonara will add a huge amount of flavour! And that flavour can save a “boring” meal too! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used this pesto recipe to save an otherwise bland meal 🙂

Ok let’s get started!

Serves: 2
Prep Time: 5 min
Cook: 5 min

Nutrition Per Serving

2g Carbs | 5g Fats | 3g Protein

What You Need

  • ½ cup Pine Nuts
  • 2 teaspoons Garlic, minced
  • 2 cups fresh basil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • ⅓ cup olive oil

Meal Prep

In a small, dry skillet, place the pine nuts over medium heat. Toast them and stir often; until they’re golden. Remove the skillet from heat.

In a food processor combine the pine nuts, garlic, basil leaves, lemon juice, nutritional yeast and sea salt. Pulse until combined. Drizzle in the olive oil while continuing to process the pesto until it has the consistency of paste – don’t over blend.

Store your pesto in the fridge for up to a week and serve over your favourite dishes. Enjoy!

This meal is creamy, vegan, low carb, and you don’t even need a spiralizer to make it!

Make sure to share this recipe with a friend if you love it!

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 min
Cook: 15 min

Nutrition Per Serving

16g Carbs | 18g Fats | 10g Protein

What You Need

Creamy Pesto Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut flour
  • 1 can (13.66 oz) coconut milk, full fat
  • ½ cup nutritional yeast
  • ⅓ cup vegan pesto

Zucchini Noodles

  • 6 medium zucchinis

Meal Prep

To make the creamy pesto sauce, get a large skillet and melt the coconut oil over medium heat. Whisk in the coconut flour and continue to whisk until the mixture has browned. Add the coconut milk, nutritional yeast, and pesto. Whisk frequently until the sauce begins to boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and continue whisking for 5 minutes while the sauce thickens. Remove from heat.

Now it’s time to make flat zucchini noodles!

Wash the zucchinis and pat them dry. Use a veggie peeler to remove the green skin. Run the veggie peeler from the top of a zucchini all the way to the bottom to create long, flat noodles. Do this with all of the zucchinis.

Toss the resulting noodles with the creamy pesto sauce and serve immediately. Enjoy!

Breakfast tends to overwhelm people. The moment we try to eat healthier, we’re suddenly at a loss at what to eat

Serves: 2
Bake  Time: 16-18 min

Nutrition Per Serving

8g Carbs | 15g Fats | 6g Protein

What You Need

  • 1 organic avocado, halved with pit removed
  • 1 egg
  • salt, pepper, and your favorite seasoning (I used Fajita Seasoning)

Meal Prep

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Flip each half of the avocado over (flat side down) and slice off some of the rounded side. This way, they can sit flat when their fleshy sides are facing up.

Place the avocados, fleshy sides up, on a baking pan. Crack some salt into each hole (I used Pink Himalayan Salt). Whisk the egg in a bowl and divide it between the avocado holes.

Sprinkle with salt, pepper and the seasoning of your choice.

Bake for 16-18 minutes, until the egg has fully set. Eat with a spoon and enjoy!

Remember the good old days when we could just eat pasta then burn off the extra calories in a weekend?

I miss that.

These days, when I’m feeling like I need my pasta fix, I reach for spaghetti squash. I’ve gushed about spaghetti squash before but THIS recipe is too fantastic not to share!

Not only is this dish low in carbohydrates, it packs a great amount of protein in each serving!

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 15 min
Cook Time: 65 min

Nutrition Per Serving

13g Carbs | 19g Fats | 36g Protein

What You Need

For the Roasted Spaghetti Squash

  • 2 spaghetti squash
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • sea salt
  • black pepper
  • Cajun seasoning blend

For the Low Carb Ground Beef Chili

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic, minced
  • 1 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons sweet paprika
  • pinch of black pepper
  • 1 can (4 oz) green chiles (fire roasted)
  • 1 cup broth (chicken, beef or veggie)

For the Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons coconut sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, minced

Meal Prep

For the Roasted Spaghetti Squash

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Cut the spaghetti squash in half, lengthwise and scoop out the seeds.

Rub the inside of each spaghetti squash half with coconut oil and sprinkle with sea salt, black pepper and Cajun seasoning. Place, cut side down, on a baking sheet and bake for 45 minutes, or until tender.

For the Low Carb Ground Beef Chili

In a medium, heavy bottomed pot heat the olive oil over medium. Add the garlic, onion and celery and stir often until tender. Add the ground beef and stir often until browned.

Add the remaining chili ingredients and reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

To Serve

Fill each roasted spaghetti squash with ¼ of the ground beef chili, top with a dollop of coconut sour cream and a sprinkle of chives. Enjoy!

We’ve been living a lie! Did you know that the basic ab crunch is NOT the most effective way to get toned abs?

Crunches don’t activate your core muscles to the extent that other exercises can, they can hurt your back, and the small motion doesn’t burn very many calories.

So why are you still doing crunches?

They may not be the most effective exercise, but until now, they’ve been the most convenient.

You don’t need equipment to bust out a few crunches, and you could do them at home, at the gym, at the park…anywhere! But let me ask you this; if you could get better results with exercises that are just as convenient a the ab crunch…would you use them? OF COURSE!

Better Than Crunches #1: The Plank

If you complete this exercise correctly, you will strengthen your neck, shoulders, arms, back, your ENTIRE core (not just your abs), your glutes, and your thighs… This is one of the reasons why the plank has become a very popular exercise, it works out nearly everything!

To perform a plank, place your forearms on the ground with your elbows aligned below your shoulders. Keep your arms shoulder-width apart and parallel to your body. Squeeze your core and pay attention to keeping your back flat.

Start at holding the plank for 10 seconds and work your way up to 1:00 min. Once you reach 1:00 min, it’s time to try more difficult variations of the plank!

Bonus Points: Focus on pulling your belly button in towards your spine and squeeze your glute muscles. Think of making your body as rigid as possible; NO SAGGING!

Better Than Crunches #2: Scissor Kick

Scissor Kicks will light your core on fire if you do them correctly. We’re not just talking about your abs here, you will be engaging core muscles that go much deeper than that!

To perform a scissor kick, lie with your back on the floor and your arms extended to the sides (palms facing down). With a slight bend in your knees, lift your legs so that your heels are about 6 inches off the ground.
Lift your left leg higher (to about a 45-degree angle) while lowering your right leg until your heel is about 2-3 inches from the ground. Switch movements by raising your right leg while lowering your left leg.

Do this for about 60 – 90 seconds.

Bonus Points: Squeeze your midsection and focus on keeping your lower back flat on the ground. Do not arch your back!

Better Than Crunches #3: V-Ups

You can totally get away with thinking of V-Ups as “next-level situps”! They’re tougher, they involve more of your body, and they look a lot more badass than crunches.

Make sure to use the bonus points below; you’ll find that your upper AND lower abs are engaged with this exercise.

To perform a v-up, lie down on your back and extend your arms straight behind your head. The back of your hands should lightly touch the floor while your palms face the ceiling. Keep your feet close together and lift your legs, keeping them straight at the same time that you raise your upper body off the floor and reach for your toes. Exhale and squeeze your abdominal muscles as you reach for your toes before slowly lowering yourself back down to the starting position.

Repeat a series of 12-20 repetitions.

Bonus Points: You’ll likely do this movement fast and explosively since it’s hard to do slowly. To really ramp up your progress though, try to go as slow and controlled as you can manage…especially while lowering your hands and feet. Also, when your hands and feet are in the lowered position, stretch your core as open as you can.

Better Than Crunches #4: Reverse Crunch

To perform a reverse crunch, lie on the floor with your legs up and bent 90 degrees (your thighs and knees will be pointing straight up and away from your body). Have your arms at your sides and on the floor. Keep your knees bent at a 90-degree angle and pull them into your chest so that your tailbone raises off of the ground. Focus on squeezing your abs to perform the movement and don’t use your hands or arms to push into the ground to help. Slowly lower your hips and legs to the starting position.

Repeat the movement for 12-20 repetitions while squeezing your abs and focusing on your breathing.

Bonus Points: This is NOT a leg or hip exercise, so don’t use focus on using those muscles. If you’re not feeling anything in your abdomen, you’re doing reverse crunches wrong. Take it slow, re-read the instructions, and focus on squeezing your abs and bringing your knees into your chest.

Better Than Crunches #5: Mason Twist

To perform a Russian twist, sit on the floor with your feet flat, knees bent at a 90-degree angle, and your upper body up off of the ground. Keep your hands interlocked in front of your midsection. Raise your feet off the ground then twist your torso to the right side until you can move your hands to the floor next to you. Slowly move back to the starting position. Repeat on the left side.

Repeat this for both sides for 60-90 seconds.

Bonus Points: Modify how upright you sit and how high you keep your legs to control how difficult this exercise is. You can do this movement quickly or slowly, but either way, do it right. Do NOT do this exercise if you have a back injury.

There you have it, 5 modern, results-driven abdominal exercises that you can perform anywhere! Aim to work your abs at least twice a week for the best results.

It’s worth noting that while strengthening your abs is a great way to tighten your waist, none of the amazing muscle tone will show if your body fat % is too high.

Great stories inspire change or action, and Lisa’s story does exactly that for us. That’s why we asked her a few questions about her journey; to inspire us and you to keep working to embrace the lean & fit lifestyle!

Lisa came to us a couple of years ago, looking to make a healthy change in her life. And that’s exactly what she found in our 21-Day Fitness & Nutrition Challenge! Lisa quickly earned phenomenal results in her weight, shape, energy, and more.

But as Lisa immediately learned after the Challenge, staying healthy demands constant attention! It took a change in her mental approach to health & fitness for her to achieve a true transformation.

Keep reading to see how Lisa made her transformation from the inside out!

How did you get started with the John Savidis’ Lean & Fit program?

“I started JSLF with a 21-Day Challenge and saw results very quickly, so I decided to join as a member. I’ve been here just over 2 years now and I’m currently down 40lbs! I’ve never felt better. “

What has your experience been like so far?

“It has been a challenge; I’ve fallen off track many times. I’ve gone up and down in weight. I’ve made so many excuses as to why I couldn’t get to the gym or for eating garbage food.

I now try not to let that be an issue! If I eat something unhealthy, I don’t punish myself. I just get right back on track. I don’t think about going to the gym, I just get up & go.“

How has your weight loss and overall progress affected your life?

“I work two physical jobs and my weight was making it very difficult to do them well. I suffered from hip pain as well as heel pain. I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired!

Since losing those 40 pounds, I no longer have any pain AND my cholesterol is normal for the first time in a long time.”

What would you say to someone hesitating to start their own health journey with JSLF?

“The atmosphere, the members, and the staff are all so friendly and welcoming. They continue to push you to reach your goals! I can’t thank them enough. I couldn’t have done it without their support! I recommend JSLF to anyone wanting a positive change! 😊“

Jess V has been able to overcome several personal obstacles to make her journey from where she was, to where she wants to be. And not just once….but twice!

Before we get to Jess’ story, Mia Savidis, owner and badass coach @ John Savidis’ Lean & Fit ELITE has a message for Jess:

“Jess, I can’t believe how motivating your story is! You are an inspiration to so many, young & old. You always give your best in every class and it certainly shows! So happy for you an your two boys. 😉 “

Read about Jess’ incredible experience in her own words…

How did you come across John Savidis’ Lean & Fit ELITE?

“I became a Lean and Fit member in 2016 after joining a 21-day challenge.

Traditional methods weren’t giving me the results I was looking for. The (old) gym wasn’t working, fitness programs were less than inspiring, and even when I did reach my fitness goals, I plateaued or gave up and gained weight.

With my career keeping me out of town 13 hours a day, I had very little time to myself let alone to focus on my fitness goals.

Hearing of John Savidis’ 30-minute classes, I loved the idea of being able to balance my work and home life!

The first Lean and Fit class I attended was one of the hardest workouts I had ever done – and I LOVED IT! After the 21-day challenge, I was hooked.”

What health benefits have you noticed since then?

“My time at John Savidis’ Lean & Fit ELITE has changed my life in so many more ways than just my waist size.

In 2013 I had been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and was told that the chances of having a baby without medical assistance were slim.

After following John Savidis’ recommended diet and exercise plan for 6 months, I noticed positive changes within my body, not just physically.

I was in the best shape of my life and eventually, my PCOS went into remission. By the time my husband and I were ready to start a family, we were able to conceive our amazing, healthy baby boy without any medical assistance!

Throughout my pregnancy, I maintained my workouts. I trained with Boban twice a week and regularly attended classes. As I got bigger, staff were happy to modify my workouts to ensure I could work out right up until 2 weeks of my due date.

Throughout my pregnancy, I gained 50lbs and worried about how hard it would be to lose the weight and how long it might take. I continuously second-guessed myself and had almost resolved that I would never be able to get back to my pre-pregnancy body. This doubt was short-lived.

With the help of the staff and the support of members, I managed to start light exercise after 10 days and back at the gym within 5 weeks.

Within 6 months postpartum, I have not only lost all of my baby weight, I no longer have to attend physio for diastasis recti and will be completing my first ever 10km run!”

What would you say to someone considering trying John Savidis’ Lean & Fit ELITE?

“John Savidis’ Lean & Fit ELITE is a supportive and judgement free environment.

Most gyms can be intimidating and overwhelming, but I have never felt that here, everyone is here with the same intentions.

The staff and clients are incredible; even going so far as to keep an eye on my son so I can get a workout in. My son watches my every move and it is so important for me to be a role model of healthy and active living for him. The gym is my second home.

I cannot see myself ever going back to a regular gym. I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy, but I am telling you it will be worth it! You only get out of it what you put into it.”

What a wonderful success story! I believe this is more proof that finding the structure & accountability you need is the key to success.

You need to have faith in the program AND help with motivation to stick with it.
